WRITTEN HISTORY FOR ESPURR IN PSMD
- In the PMD series, Espurr was born and raised in 'Serene Village'. When visiting her house, she appears to live alone; but given the emphasis that children need guardians at the least in the game, it's assumed there is someone looking after her.
- Espurr is first encountered as a student at the school; she is fairly quiet, and witnesses the player character passing out due to their partner crashing into them. While others in the class seem prone to distraction, Espurr seems to be otherwise attentive during lessons. During recess, she also politely remains at her desk, rather than socializing with the others. She simply heads straight home after her first class with the player as well.
- On the day after this, the entire class is brought together for a class trip in order to practice exploration tactics, Espurr is asked to instead act as coordinator, tracking dungeon teams on their progress. She only discovers this after the teams are assigned, leaving her on her own-'Mr. Farfetch'd, am I to...'-and given her words, may be used to occasionally being given such a role. After her role of coordinator is explained, she simply states that she understands, and goes silent again.
- During the trip, Espurr seems unable to see so much as merely speak to the others through telepathy; her messages are even started with a 'bzzt-bzz' sound, before her voice comes through. Espurr is rather calm each time she speaks to the others, with her surprise coming out somewhat muted when it shows-further more, she remains unaware that the player's team only succeeded while leaving (unintentionally) a team mate behind. She watches as the teacher tells the player and partner off for their responsibility, before offering to go and search for the team mate (goomy) as well...likely doing so alone rather than alongside the player, given dialogue between player and partner after the fact.
- The following day, Espurr watches as Pancham and the partner argue about the partner's dream to join the Expedition Society-despite not yet being an adult. Pancham in fact says 'maybe someone like Espurr [could join early]...', pointing to her skill and maturity. (Espurr, for her part, says nothing, politely waiting for class to begin)
- Later on during class, the students are again gathered outside the practice dungeon, this time to train utilizing 'looplets', devices within which unique and power granting stones (called Emeras) may be set. This time Vice Principal 'Watchog' places them into teams, with Espurr being asigned to one instead of being designated the coordinator. She travels with Deerling, along with the player character, rather eagerly agreeing with Deerling when she shouts for them to all do their best. She also goes to receive the assigned item box for their team at Deerling's request. She then listens just as excitedly as the others while Watchog explains how the devices function, and politely humors the pokemon when he tries to impress them with drawn info cards and things. ('I thought he was being playful and amusing', she says after the facade is blown by the partner)
- The team goes through the dungeon with relative ease, making good use of the looplets-Espurr seems to use her psychic sense in particular to travel through, calmly telling her team mates 'this way' when they come near the top, soon showing them the goal flags they need to take back. ('We appear to be the first to have arrived.') They soon return back with the flag, watching as the other team continues to bicker with themselves. When they leave for the day, Espurr says a polite goodbye to the school nurse saying farewell to them at the gate, before continuing on back.
- On the following day, Espurr listens as the class questions just where the player character comes from. While the others make the wild guess that they may have moved in from Lively Town, Espurr logically notes that Nuzleaf (the player's parental guardian for the moment) is hardly the 'city type', noting that she thinks they're 'on the wrong track'. When the player claims to have come from the human world, she notes that the player is 'undeniably not human'-leading others to disbelieve the player entirely. She herself states that she doesn't exactly believe it, nor does she disbelieve it either, stating 'what would [the player] gain from telling such a lie?' The wild discussion is quelled when the Principal comes out, noting that uneblievable things may happen, and that what seems like a lie may not be one (not that he knows what they were precisely talking about). Class then begins, with Espurr announcing that she isn't sure Mr. Farfetch'd has the right book when he announces the lesson plan and begins reading a vastly different tale to them.
- Near the end of the day, Espurr and the others excitedly greet the school's special guests, Magnezone and the police patrol, while Watchog tries to teach them about 'Alliances'. After watching Watchog nearly faint due to the strike, Espurr, Pancham, and Shelmet give 'alliance' a try first; teaming together in order to strike all at once against their opponent.
- Class ends for the day, bringing things to the next. For their health class, they learn about the details of 'evolution'...a process that brings them ~closer to being an adult~...which the partner character likens to 'maturing quicker'. When Audino notes that this is, in a sense, rather accurate, Espurr and Deerling are curiously the only two to find themselves somewhat unnerved by the fact (likely to draw a gag to what Health Class normally refers to with the matter of 'maturing').
- The class is briefly interrupted when Roselia drops by in search of her daughter, Budew; as she seems injured, Audino takes her to the nurse's office, leaving the class alone to talk. The students chat through theories on what happened to Budew (Espurr silently listening and observing), before the player notes that Budew had earlier been told about a place where she could find honey. Budew being as young as she was, failed to pay attention to the warnings that the beedrill and combee there would be territorial at this time of year however...and it may be why she's missing. Espurr herself confirms that it's 'honey making season', and that it would absolutely explain where Budew had gone. With so many of the classmates still certain that the player is a liar however, many of the students are hesitant to listen-so Espurr watches as the player, and soon after the player's partner, ditch class in order to search the Nectar Medow for Budew.
- While the player and partner are successful, this does (naturally) mean that they need to face the Vice Principal the next morning at class. Espurr is well aware of this; while the two are hiding behind a rock outside the property, readying themselves for the inevitable, she contacts them, saying 'you're hiding, aren't you?' (again proving that while she can locate and speak with individuals, she cannot actually where they specifically are, or what they are doing). She tells them to wait a moment, and then contacts the Vice Principal with her telepathy. 'I...I just wanted you to know how much I really admire you, Vice Principal~' (Naturally this is not true; but while she continues to butter him up with statements on how he'll surely be the next principal, she soon gains the chance to tell the others to hurry up and rush into class for their lesson. As such, they make it in just in time to avoid proper punishment, as the Vice Principal only has time to threaten it. Even his threats are useless however; Principal Simipour arrives and announces that the two had in fact gone to Nectar Meadow and saved Budew, a matter that Roselia herself had come to him in order to explain. Espurr excitedly congratulates the two while the other classmates apologize, doing so herself as '[she] doubted [them], and didn't do anything to help'. She laughs as the antics of the others reach louder pitch, and classes proceed normally from there, with Espurr leaving as soon as the bell rings while others socialize a bit.
- Class proceeds normally for the next number of days as well; with Espurr always heading alone, while other classmates chat and socialize amongst themselves. As summer draws near however, she sees fit to remain behind after one particularly long day (according to Goomy at least), still keeping quiet except for an occasional comment ('that isn't the word you were looking for I don't think', she remarks to the partner character at one point). While the others comment on the heat, she soon notes that they should likely head home, and does just that moments later.
- The next day marks the last lesson before summer vacation; the students, including Espurr, cheer as the lessons come to a close and the summer 'officially' begins. As the days pass into the summer vacation, rumors of ghosts haunting the school grounds at night begin to spread; worse, various members of faculty still keeping watch there begin to fall victim to attacks, even going missing. When the missing teacher in question is recovered, much of the village is there to question him, including Espurr. Espurr, along with a few other classmates, explain to the player and partner what they've learned thus far on their arrival; namely that 'at the very least, Mr. Farfetch'd was not injured'. He seems not to recall where he was taken and held however, only able to remember blue flames. After the adults clear out, Espurr wonders just what happened to Mr. Farfetch'd, and the students discuss the matter of the ghostly rumors and happenings. She watches as the others fret or laugh over the matter, and after the cutscene (when spoken to) notes that she would like to get to the bottom of the mystery herself.
- As another day passes, Pancham gathers everyone from the school to share some 'exciting news'. They gather at the tree outside the village, where Pancham dares everyone to stay the night at the school. He declares that they'll all 'face their fears' and grow some spines, and get to the bottom of the rumors once and for all. Espurr listens as everyone debates the consequences, before agreeing with Pancham quite cheerfully (even smiling!). 'I want to see these ghosts for myself.~' (Pancham, in reply, states that she's 'a girl who knows what matters', before announcing that he'll see them all that evening at the school.)
- That evening, everyone meets up, waiting for the player and partner to arrive at the school. Under the cover of the dark, they each go to sit at their seats, wondering 'what next'. Pancham states that they simply need to wait for the ghosts, going so far as to call out for them, demanding they prove they exist. (The partner faints out of sheer fear even before anything happens; 'I imagine [the partner] could take the suspense no longer') The ghosts do indeed begin to call out, claiming it is hot; Espurr questions if there is someone in the school, and soon enough blue flames begin to appear, the 'ghosts' revealing themselves. One by one, the classmates seem to pass out-the ghosts claiming that they have 'some nerve' summoning them there, and announcing that they'll show them what true fear is. The pokemon pass out, and Espurr, Shelmet, and Pancham vanish...though when the Player, partner, Deerling, and Goomy begin to fret, it's revealed that Espurr in fact didn't pass out at all. 'I know where they are', she states calmly, revealing herself to the others. She followed Pancham and Shelmet as they were being kidnapped, only returning to the school grounds after she could determine where they were taken. 'Yes. I saw it all. When the large shadow appeared, and everyone began to faint... I did not faint. But I could not predict what would happen next... And so I pretended to be unconscious as well.' As the others marvel at her ability to keep her composure, they question how she wasn't scared, with Espurr replying that she wasn't scared at all; 'If anything, I quite like [the ghosts]!'
- Espurr continues to explain what happened while the rest were unconscious; the shadow eventually vanished, and the blue flames began to carry Shelmet and Pancham away. Espurr reminds the others that this matched what occurred to Mr. Farfetch'd, before explaining that she followed after them. She then shows them where the two were taken, revealing that the large door to Ancient Barrow (a place the children have been warned to never enter under any circumstances) in the middle of the village is now open. She states that they went in-or 'more accurately, they were taken there', and that this is the last she saw of them. The children decide from there to go in after the missing boys; despite any fear, all five decide to enter, travelling as a complete team. (though interestingly in the game menu, only one of the three npc classmates can be considered a team mate!)
- It takes some time to locate Shelmet and Pancham, and the pokemon find themselves reaching the very bottom of the Barrow; once there, Espurr announces that she hears voices; they follow them to the middle of a great chamber, where they hear Shelmet and Pancham both calling for their help. When they announce they're going to free them, the 'Dark Land Emmissary' Giratina appears, and announces that he intends to take them! There is only one condition with which he will allow them to leave-if they grant him Pancham and Shellmet's spirits. The partner immediately refuses; with so much volume that Giratina comes out to face them in combat, alongside a series of Litwick. The students all agree with the partner however ('Anyone of us would have done the same', Espurr announces), and fight valliantly-until finally, Giratina seems to be defeated. The pokemon seems to fumble with threats, the litwick running away. Espurr catches Giratina on the holes in the threats in fact, until finally the litwick tell their friend to 'give it a rest'; and so 'Solosis', the pokemon creating a psychic image of the great dragon, reveals themselves. As it seems. Solosis had been helping the litwick to create fear; the little baby pokemon cries about how they tried so hard to help the litwick gather the fear they needed in order to survive, but the litwick tell them it's fine, before apologizing to the children. It was all a ruse in order to create the energy they need to eat; they were litwick travelling the world to scare pokemon and strengthen their flames. Espurr listens to their tale quietly, and in the end she and Deerling interrupt before the ghosts get too carried away with their excitement. 'I agree that you've probably taken things too far,' she announces when Deerling scolds them. The police had to get involved and everything, after all! 'Once everyone finds out about this, you probably won't be able to stay here.' The litwick plead with them to keep them secret however; and after the partner flatly decides that's fine ('they're not really bad, and they needed the energy, right? They should probably try to do some good every time they do some scaring') Espurr notes that she's having trouble following the partner's line of thinking; 'Saying that it's fine to scare pokemon "just a little"? How do you measure that? But I do think that doing something nice for others is a good idea...So if that's what [The partner] wants...then I suppose I'm alright with it.' As the others slowly agree with the strange idea, the team finally recover Shelmet and Pancham, (albeit only because Espurr has the sense to remind everyone about why they came in the first place) making sure the litwick promise to not go so far as kidnapping again. The children each head home-where most of them successfully sneak into bed without being caught. (...Espurr, naturally, being one of the successful ones)
- The next morning, the player explains this to the others themselves; the partner isn't even there, as Carracosta (their guardian) is making them clean the house 'top to bottom' as punishment. 'Perhaps being found out is for the best'-Espurr, as well as Deerling, acknowledge that they felt rather bad about sneaking out and hiding things from their parents. They in fact told theirs- 'It seems that the grown-ups all react in their own different ways~.' While the lot of them talk about how worried their parents were, Espurr states that 'getting yelled at a bit might be a good thing', before adding that she doesn't even really have parents that are around enough to do that sort of thing (which, given they'd just said being scolded was because their parents cared, implies that Espurr feels rather neglected). The children all laugh as some of the others point out that the player never even 'came clean'-they were straight up caught and lectured.
- The player at this time is asked if they're planning to go into another dungeon, implying that the children are by now aware of their status as a 'junior expedition member'-or, at the very least, assume the player is just 'playing pretend' (and needs extra team-mates while the partner is cleaning). Espurr notes that it sounds fun, and that she would 'be OK with going~' (In the playthrough watched, I was fortunate enough to have someone who chose Espurr! As only one may be picked.) When chosen, Espurr smiles excitedly, and politely thanks the player for picking her. She thus joins along and follows the player through the town on their pre-dungeon errands as well, going shopping and training new moves before finally heading to their dungeon mission for the day. After the missions are complete, Espurr cheers that it was 'fairly exciting!', before giving the player something in thanks; specifically a set of 'silver spikes', a throw item. She then tells the player they can call on her any time they like for another adventure, officially making a 'complete connection' on the player's connection orb. She then heads to her home.
- Summer vacation continues as normal for a little after this, until a few days later. 'Strange Pokemon' (the Beheeyem pursuing the player) begin lurking around the outside of the village. The player and partner decide to leave for Lively Town, planning to sneak away in the night when their parental guardians refuse to allow it. (Supposedly they speak to everyone in the village to try and sway the decision first; but uniquely Espurr is not spoken to at all in this event, despite the dialogue trigger not appearing until the player does indeed speak to EVERYONE in the village...potentially because she would likely say 'go for it'.
- Later on in the night after the player and partner's failed attempt to get permission, the children gather at the exit to the village, cornering them. They came to see them off, as Espurr realized the two were going to leave and notified the other children. 'Sorry. I thought you two had been acting suspicious for a while. So I took the liberty of following you.' As the partner cries about how glad they are to be able to say goodbye to them, Espurr adds that 'It's not just us'; the adults have left a set of letters of their own farewells, for the two. 'Sorry. We kinda told the adults too.' (Apparently they decided to save face and pretend they were never told instead)
- After the two leave, life returns 'to normal' for quite some time. Or as normal as can be with the state of the world; rumors of pokemon being turned to stone begin to spread, and a massive heatwave floats through the air. Even so, things are so peaceful and typical that when the player and partner return to it for the sake of a criminal pursuit, it appears that nothing has changed since they left. Even so; upon their arrival, it is in fact Espurr who greets them, calling out their names and coming to speak with them about what they missed. She welcomes them home with a wide smile, asking how they've been while claiming to have 'heard some things' about the two. Specifically that they became official members of the expedition society! 'Congratulations, you two!' When the two frantically ask if Espurr has seen any suspicious pokemon however, she answers 'no'; and when she asks what 'the deal' with the 'suspicious red pokemon' is, the group reunion is cut short. Nuzleaf runs down from his guard post at Revelation Mountain, where a pokemon is invading. 'But Revelation Mountain is our most sacred place...no one is supposed to go up there.'
- The mountain it seems is where Krookodile, the criminal, has gone; the two players, their expedition teammate (Archen), and Nuzleaf all take off to head up the mountain. Espurr begins to follow, shouting that she'll come as well-but the partner stops her, claiming that it's too dangerous; and quickly comes up with a better idea as well. Remembering Espurr's telepathy, they ask for her to keep tabs on the team from a distance, so that she can warn Ampharos, leader of the Expedition Society, and all others. Espurr seems to agree, watching the others leave... ...but after, she looks around for anyone watching, and then speedily takes off to follow from a distance.
- It's unknown how much Espurr sees, given the distance between her and the others. However, the others arrive to the peak of Revelation Mountain to discover a spring that-as it turns out-will restore the pokemon turned to stone. Krookodile appears just after this discovery however, preventing the player from trying to break the barrier protecting the spring right away; Suicune and Raikou appear, accusing him of being the one to turn Entei to stone, but Krookodile protests, muttering how 'this wasn't part of the deal'-he demands money, but with all the pressure around, the player finally breaks the barrier before finding out just who Krookodile wants money from...and as it turns out, it was Nuzleaf. Krookodile claims he just came for the money he was promised in return for dropping warnings, at Nuzleaf's request, and Nuzleaf reveals himself for who he 'is'. The barrier is broken-and now the water can be stolen; he and his allies can turn those they need to stone without worry that someone will recover them, and as Krookodile's reward, Nuzleaf turns him to stone on the spot. Nuzleaf was the one to turn everyone to stone-he explains how he tricked the player, taking advantage of his memory loss. And while the others try to surround and face Nuzleaf, things grow worse; Yveltal appears to Nuzleaf's aid, and immediately overpowers the team. He takes all of their energy, turning Suicune, then Raikou, and then the others, into stone. This conclusion to what occurs is what Espurr most certainly witnesses-remaining hidden in the bushes, fearing for her life. She watches as Nuzleaf and Yveltal steal the water and stop up the spring, using it to boost their power and cement their threat on the world.
- Those who are turned to stone find their spirits wandering an Abyssal Badland known as the 'void', while darkness begins to enshroud the world, blotting out the sun. Nearly all pokemon out in the world become turned to stone, one after another. Only those safely inside buildings and homes escape-Espurr, seemingly included. As it's revealed much later, even after the player returns to find her safe in the Expedition's base, Espurr did not go unnoticed at Revelation Mountain. She was discovered by Nuzleaf and Yveltal, and forced to make a deal for her life. Espurr had no intentions of following through with this deal however. Instead, she chose to act as a double agent-where Nuzleaf left her alive with the intent of using her as a mole, allowing her to stay 'hidden' on the mountain until Ampharos and Jirachi found her, she herself used this role to in turn gather intel on nuzleaf, in order to give the Expedition a final edge and defense against the attack.
- To this end, when Ampharos first arrives at the summit to find the remains of what occurred, Espurr comes out through the bushes from Serene Village, where she discovered everyone turned to stone. 'I don't get it...what do we do now?' Despite all the deals she has made (deals that are only revealed later to the player of course), the pokemon trembles at the verge of tears, unsure of what hope there is. Ampharos assures her that it will be alright, thanking her for all the information they received thanks to her contacting them in the first place. He asks her if they can count on her help, to which she replies that she has nowhere else to go; so if 'Mr. Ampharos' is going to restore everyone, then 'please let me help [them]'.
- The player and partner, as noted, eventually succeed in returning from the Void; they make their way to Lively Town to find the building acting as a last safe haven for the few pokemon to escape being turned to stone-shopkeepers, tutors, and of course, Espurr, Ampharos, and Jirachi. When the two listen to what has been going on in the world, they hear about how the latter two are on the search for information on what to do-it is then that Espurr herself is discovered, standing in the office room. Shocked with disbelief, Espurr hurriedly asks if it's really them, if they're alright, and before she knows it trips and falls trying to come to them and embrace them, breaking into tears. The player and partner try to console her, as she explains that she had indeed followed them and watched as they were turned to stone. She's still astonished that they came back from it at all, apologizing for what they'd gone through. She also explains that she uses her telepathy to keep in touch with Ampharos and Jirachi, keeping track of everything happening. She is forced to admit to the two that even all of the villagers were turned to stone, nearly crying again-and when the partner runs off, almost chases after to apologize. The player however assures her that things will be fine. They had already resolved to focus on things-and they don't have much time to fix it. At that moment they hear a sound, and Espurr notes that someone is watching them. She and the player both hear the sound coming from upstairs in the observatory, and find for themselves a Beheeyem; the two beat it down into submission ('He's persistent, I'll give him that!'), with the partner returning in fury to truly slam the pokemon down. As the partner prepares to continue their onslaught, Espurr stops them- 'That's enough! They're not even fighting back any more! ...Now tell us! What did you come here for!' Pulled to their feet, the pokemon to reveals that he and his fellows had been under mind control. He came there to escape from Nuzleaf and Yveltal, having broken from the control of their 'Dark Matter'. When the two players escaped from the void, a brief shock allowed him to break free-and while the others are suspicious, Espurr claims that she believes him. Ampharos had explained that Dark Matter controls the hearts of others in order to obtain energy-and the Beheeyem insists that it's true, and that he only fought back because they attacked him out of the blue. He certainly couldn't turn them to stone. He explains to them that he knows where they can find the Tree of Life in order to restore everything, claiming it's in the middle of the Prehisotoric Ruins. But they don't have time-and he needed to find someone who could defeat Dark Matter. He cries, wishing to make amends, and Espurr asks what the others think of his story. They decide to speak with Ampharos on the matter, but when she tries to contact him, she cannot. The players thus decide to leave on their own; and while Espurr isn't sure about staying behind, she notes that they don't have much time, and thus have little choice. She'll try to get contact out, and additionally summon up Lapras, who hid at the bottom of the sea-Lapras can thus transport the two (plus Beheeyem) to where they must go. The players leave, and Espurr continues to try making contact from the office. Playing her role for Nuzleaf, she tells Nuzleaf that the others are heading to the Prehistoric Ruin, promising she won't try to contact them after this. 'If anything changes, I'll be sure to let you know, Mr. Nuzleaf.'
- The players reach the bottom of the ancient ruin, but find that there isn't anything like a tree in sight. Even Beheeyem seems shocked; before he suddenly breaks into crazed laughter. Nuzleaf was the one who had told him the tree was in the ruins; and now that they are there, he realizes that Nuzleaf must have known he had broken control by then. It's the perfect trap-for them, and for him as well. Nuzleaf appears with the other Beheeyem, cornering them in battle. Nuzleaf takes the time to reveal the entire tale of the player character's background from here; that the Beheeyem had attacked the player earlier before the game's start, erasing the player's memories. It was then that Nuzleaf chose to trick them, realizing that the player didn't even recall being attacked by them and even Nuzleaf himself. It was perfect, and it worked-they got their hands on the luminous water, they did away with their greatest enemy...and now, they would send the three to the deepest, darkest part of the Voidlands. To drive the nail further, Espurr reveals herself, as 'Nuzleaf's agent'; she explains that she had been caught while hiding, and that she'd been made to help so that she wouldn't be sent to the void lands. 'I certainly don't want to go there. So I decided to help him! (she says with a cheery smile) Sorry about that!~' Nuzleaf claims that Espurr has been on their side playing double agent the whole time, and offers the Beheeyem traitor as well one last chance. The Beheeyem wants to save the world-but more than anything he wants to live, and so he turns on them as well. With the bitterness of broken friendships weighing on the two, Nuzleaf is confident that vengeance is settled. Just before he can turn them to stone however, Ampharos, Jirachi, and the pokemon Celebi appear; and Espurr's actions as a true double agent pay off. Celebi transports them far, far away from the ruins, and Amphraos explains that he's been helping them to find the true Tree of Life in order to save the world. Celebi had been looking for answers to the current problem by searching through the past-and now, with the world being drawn toward the sun and withering away under the dying tree of life, they have absolutely no time to lose. While Ampharos explains that all of this information and more was compiled through Espurr, the partner butts in to protest that she had been working for Nuzleaf the whole time. 'He threatened her, and-' 'Did you really believe that?!' Espurr is insulted-but her rage passes quickly as she explains her true position. 'I suppose I could have just let Nuzleaf turn me to stone when he threatened to do so...but that wouldn't have been very interesting. So I pretended to subscribe to his beliefs. That alllowed me to pass along information about Ampharos to Nuzleaf...while also keeping Ampharos abreast of what Nuzleaf was doing. I suppose I'm what you might call a double agent? At any rate, threats don't work on me.' (Once again, she smiles quite widely while announcing all of this, even laughing as the partner notes that she can be a rather scary pokemon at times.) Espurr even continues to explain, having them recall when they caught the Beheeyem. She had claimed to be unable to contact Ampharos; but in reality, she had, and filled him in about the situation-Ampharos had told her to pretend no contact had been made, so that the trap would go through. While it was still more serious than they had imagined, they learned some very important matters.
- Ampharos thus begins to explain what they learned and pieced together from the past; about how Dark Matter was the result of all negativity from all pokemon in the world, gathering together into a single being to attack the Tree of Life. In the past, the worst of it was always stopped by the aligning of stars, and some other great force; but it was confusing, and they had to search for what happened more specifically. It turned out, the last time things occured as they did now, a human-the player-had fought with Dark Matter. (Or at least, they assume it was then) They fought until the aligned stars could do their work again, and in preparation for when the stars would fail once more, the pokemon of the past made precautions. The scarves the partner and player wear, made from fibers of the Tree of Life-the water of the Luminous Spring...they still aren't sure how the partner came to be the one who inherited them, (and the partner it seems was just found as an infant), but that's hardly the trouble. Espurr asks about Mew; the one who made the scarves and fought alongside the human in the ancient past. It seems Mew likely threw the human-player through time and space to come to that time, though Celebi notes it's 'just a theory'. They're almost certain that the player has the experience and knowledge burried in them to face the Dark Matter however; but the player can remember nothing. All the same, they know the scarves were made for this battle. And they know the two must fight in it. So, they lead them onward; 'We must act at once'-the tree of life lies within the forest they teleported to, and it is here that the final battle will be held. The group travels on together, Espurr included, until they can reach the Tree's location.
- When they finally reach the tree, Espurr stares at the massive growth in shock and awe; even withered, it is an incredible sight. Incredible, and horrid. The tree smoulders with black near the top; but before they can move to begin climbing it, Nuzleaf, the Beheeyem, and Yveltal corner them. The Dark Matter takes hold of all but the non-possessed Beheeyem; Espurr notes that they seem to be in pain in fact. Beheeyem explains that they've been acting odd, as if they weren't there. Dark Matter's hold has grown stronger-and Espurr shouts that they don't have any time to waste then. The Beheeyem faces his old friends to try and fight them off-but he is turned to stone in a flash. A similar blast charges toward Espurr-but before it hits, a 'shield' appears. The player's scarves react with the tree, protecting those with them and causing the two to evolve to their final stage. Ampharos realizes that the tree of life and the scarves resonation is what causes the evolution-as well as what repelled the Dark Matter's magic. The tree is still alive; 'as long as we can keep ourselves from being turned to stone, we can fight this!' Espurr and everyone face Nuzleaf and Yveltal, trying to beat them down. They manage to successfully repell the shadows-just long enough for the pokemon to question where they are and what they were doing...but they vanish from sight just as quick, and Dark Matter itself laughs in the distance. ('Did you just laugh Espurr?' 'Hmm? That wasn't me. That sounds nothing like me.')
- Dark Matter addresses all of them, laughing about how their time has come. A multitude of voices speaking as one run through their heads-and before their eyes, the Tree of Life uproots itself from the ground, and begins to leave the very surface of the earth. Realizing that only the players stand a chance of defeating Dark Matter, the other pokemon do their best to get the two to the tree. Espurr asks if they can warp them to it, but Celebi's magic is being blocked by Dark Matter-so the partner tries to simply jump up the debris. The player follows-and so the pokemon who can fly give them as much a boost as they can, sending them their wishes in order to get them there; but Espurr watches as they fall, unable to reach. It seems nothing can get to the tree; but the few remaining Legendaries in the world, now hearing the triumphant speech of Dark Matter, come to their aid. While Dark Matter laughs about how their creation was all the fault of the pokemon in the world, a great roar comes forward-Espurr and the others realize that something is stopping the tree of life from leaving the planet entirely; namely Deoxys and Rayquaza. The few remaining Legendaries in the world shout that Dark Matter should not underestimate the might of those who remain-and the pokemon Arceus joins in to address the group now at the base of the tree. They explain that they will use all their power to keep the tree from leaving; they, and even those 'normal' pokemon who remain, even if they must turn to stone. The scarves can only protect those two once they get near the tree. Arceus will use his power to transport them onto the tree's base-and from there, they must fight. The partner marvels at how everyone has just now come together-but Espurr explains that this is because of Ampharos and Jirachi. While the two were in the voidlands, they travelled far and wide to spread word and call for help. Now the pokemon have heeded the call-but the rest is in the hands of the player and partner. Espurr watches as they're transported away, and from there, is only able to hope.
- By the time the players reach Dark Matter, Espurr is still waiting at the bottom of the tree with Ampharos; a small shot of her is granted while the partner silently prays for everyone to hold on. But Dark Matter's power becomes too great. The Tree of Life finally withers entirely, and those fighting the tree-and those waiting at the bottom, Espurr included-all find themselves turned to stone and cast to the Void. Even from the void however, Espurr and everyone retain the will to live on-their spirits and voices cheering on the player in spirit to defeat the Dark Matter. The player and partner manage to successfully defeat Dark Matter as a result-even while understanding that Dark Matter will, truly, return even after destroyed...along with all the hate and pain that created it in the first place. With one last blow, all that Dark Matter did is reversed-the tree of life bursts with life, pulling the planet back to its proper alignment and spin. It turns the pokemon back from stone and revives them from the Void. Espurr awakens to a tree filled with life, re-rooted in the ground; though she doesn't actually awaken in the same place where the player and partner come back to consciousness from their fight. Arceus told everyone of the success and safety however-this is how Espurr learns that they succeeded. While they aren't around for Xerneas' arrival, Ampharos and Espurr do come running to meet with them and congratulate them all the same. ('Perhaps you should look behind you', she tells Ampharos, when he successfully runs immediately past the ones he's trying to embrace.) She finds herself having to explain that he managed to successfully bodyslam the partner character in his excitement in fact, announcing it all with a rather blank tone. (She then gets the 'pleasure' of watching the partner boast and cheer, and the actual pleasure of the player being rather stuck for words when the congratulations are turned on them. 'I'm not that fond of [the partner's] preening...But...I am glad. I am so very glad...that you came back safe...' Espurr is so relieved that she begins to cry; it's only the incoming messages from Dedenne and others of the Expedition Society calling in to prove all others turned to stone have returned, that stops her tears. (The relief that everyone is back does, however, drive the partner to cry.)
- Everyone proceeds to head back to Lively Town, where they recover from events. As Espurr prepares to go back to the village with the players, Ampharos thanks her one last time, while she insists on thanking them. 'You gave me a home when I had no place to go.' She at last is able to return to her village, her friends, and her family, travelling with the players until they're safely back and able to let the other two stay for a short visit as well. 'I know I've said it before...but thank you for saving the world. It's strange isn't it? I first heard that [the player] was a human all that long time ago in the village...but to think that it was actually an incredibly ancient pokemon that called [them] to this world, or that [they] had fought Dark Matter before in the ancient past... It doesn't matter whether you remember or not. You've done your duty. Both in the past and now again. Whenever the world needed you...' Espurr tells the player they're a hero-that they should never forget that. ('Stop, [partner], just stop. I hate when you make that face', they add, when the partner attempts to pose and boast as an 'example' of what the player should be doing to soak in the praise.) She laughs and soon gets the partner laughing, and they continue on their journey back home. Unknowingly, Espurr starts the player worrying about if they'll now have to return to the world of humans however; she notices their stare, and notes that they seem deep in thought, asking if something is on their mind. The player insists they're fine however, and so they carry on.
- The three finally arrive home-to a seemingly deserted village, much to the seeming shock of everyone. But before their eyes the village rushes out to surprise them, cheering and congratulating them; Espurr telepathically contacted them ahead of time. 'I can't believe you left us all out of the loop like that!' 'Well I did (she says with a smile). It only seemed natural when Deerling first mentioned it.' Espurr notes that Nuzleaf isn't around however. She comments that he did indeed return to the village 'though he didn't do much to announce his presence'. Apparently he apologized to everyone in the village, and then left however-unable to bear facing the others when they arrived. He said he would be back another day, but only after some time; if the player could bear waiting for him. The celebrations on the safety of the world continued for some time, with people gathering at Carracosta's home for a great meal and for the partner to share the story of what happened, a feast that Espurr herself attended to occasionally chip in for help. (Mostly to correct and help the partner on whenever they fumbled on the facts) Eventually, she returned home...the adventure she had taken part of finally coming to a rest for normal, quiet life to resume.
- Unfortunately (and fortunately) it seems the Player would never have to return home; but their partner-or rather, Mew Reborn-would have to leave to become Mew again. It's unknown how Espurr would have learned of the partner vanishing, but with how long the player wept on the hill of their disappearance, right at the village, she certainly would have been aware. When the player attempts many, many days later to find Mew and gain some answers, Mew remembers nothing-in an attempt to see if the partner's memories lay in their heart, the player thus brings them to the village again after first settling back in at the Expedition Society; Mew is beginning to fall ill, so the hope was that bringing Mew there would help them, that seeing the view from the tree hill could work. (though the player manages to get such a good knock to the head that they forget all about that for a bit, as someone attacks them and kidnaps Mew) Once again, it's unknown how much of this Espurr is actually aware of; while they were in the town, the matter of Mew in particular could easily have been hidden from her. Since the entire plot (which in fact ends in the partner's revival, Mew safe and sound in addition) surrounding the reunion with the partner fails to directly include Espurr in any way, it's assumed that the partner was said to vanish, but then noted to have (somehow) returned. It stands therefore as a rumor that she had yet to confirm herself before the decided canon point. (though it does mean that Nuzleaf therefore returned to the village and is living there once more, alongside the Beheeyem)
- From this point on, Espurr's part in the storyline is over. The player can only come to see her in her house (alone), where (when spoken to) she'll simply welcome the player and partner back to the village, and then laugh and smile while saying they can simply call on her any time they wish to travel together again. From this, it can be assumed that even without knowing the details of where the partner went and how they came back, she's simply accepted it, returning after the summer vacation to her normal life. (Supporting this, Espurr is among the pokemon who, despite being a lower evolution, are unable to evolve, with the statement 'this pokemon is unable to evolve...' showing. She's not interested in skipping ahead here!)
